THERE GOES THE NEIGHBORHOOD
A video program from the Media Burn Independent Video Archive
8:00pm, Sun. April 8, 2007

The Media Burn Independent Video Archive is a collection of independent, non-fiction video dating from 1972. A bulk of the material in this archive documents the recent history of Chicago and has grown out of the collection of Tom Weinberg, a local video producer. This program of short videos has pulled documentary footage from the Archive to weave a narrative of Chicago's political and geographic history.

In 1981, Chicago Mayor Jane Byrne moved into an apartment in the Cabrini-Green housing projects in an attempt to highlight efforts to clean up crime there. This was largely regarded as a media stunt, and she has been remembered mostly for this blunder. Cabrini continues to be a controversial area, and local politicians continue to provide entertaining spectacle!

"There Goes the Neighborhood" is part of a group curatorial project, "Here and Elsewhere," created as part of the 2007 undergraduate exhibition at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. The six artists in collaboration are Clint Bargers, Julia Doran, Carter Lashley, Tim Ridlen, Harley Young, and Daniel Zaretsky. Opening at Gallery 2 on March 31, 2007, the gallery exhibition features new work from each of the artists. A major part of this curatorial project, in addition to the exhibition, is a series of events around the city of Chicago throughout the duration of the exhibition.

- "Jane Byrne Easter Program," produced by Tom Weinberg and Tom Finerty, 17min.
