Organized by Thorne Brandt Art Poker is an art contest utilizing the competitive strategies and the rules of poker in which the artists interact with each other directly. If you are a person who has ever had writer's block, you might understand this. An artist's slump is usually not caused by the inability to think of anything new. On the contrary, an artist is affected by thinking of too many things to create, yet being able to give priority to none. It is the equivalent of being pulled in every direction at the same time, leaving no movement at all. The best advice when one is unable to think of what one should do, is what one is prohibited from doing. Art Poker provides this. Art Poker forces inspiration. The result is more work being produced. The gathering of people, assignments, and critiques that take place during a game of Art Poker create an environment similar to a studio classroom setting found in art school, minus the tuition. The motivation of receiving the credit for a studio classroom is replaced by the opportunity for prize money, and respect. |
